Who is Together Lets Rise?
There is a disruption in the family unit due to mass incarceration. In the United States parents go to prison at troubling rates. 1 in 9 African American children has a parent currently incarcerated; 1 in 28 Hispanic children has a parent currently incarcerated; and, 1 in 57 white children has a parent currently incarcerated. 1 in 14 American children has a parent incarcerated at some point in their childhood, African American children face parental incarceration at a staggering rate of 1 in 4 at some point in their childhood. Nearly 80% of incarcerated women are mothers and are victims of sexual/domestic violence or suffer from mental illness. Research on the gang problem has provided insight into the money being spent on correctional institutions and incarceration rather than gang intervention and prevention programs. It cost taxpayers more money to incarcerate than implementing gang intervention and prevention programs.
Together Let's Rise Is Making a Major and Positive Impact
Recidivism rates are over 50% in Los Angeles and considered the gang capital of the nation with roughly 450 active gangs and over 45,000 members. There is lack of access to client-centered services in the community. Together Let’s Rise goal is to provide a comprehensive program, diversion and reentry programs that empower and strengthen children, incarcerated and formally incarcerated individuals, families, and communities.
